Discussing Adoption

Dublin, Ireland

We know that every adopted child, regardless of their parents' background, will have questions about who and where they came from, and that's why we promise to be open about where they came from and have an honest line of communication with their birth parents throughout their lives.

As a same-sex couple, we will tell our child that the story of how they came to be ours is unique and special. We will explain that we hoped and waited for him or her to come, that we went looking for them in the world, and that when we found them, we knew our family was complete. Love makes a family, and we will demonstrate and affirm at every opportunity, from every game and match to every report card, win or lose, that we love them and cannot imagine our lives any other way.

We will do our best to make our child feel special and wanted, but also the confidence to feel, as every kid wants at some point, that the story of their origin is completely normal.

Cultural Diversity

Making Posole

We are incredibly lucky to have a large and diverse group of family and friends. Holidays and family birthdays are always special moments and we rarely see one pass by on the calendar without a gathering. We celebrate both the typical yearly traditions but also unique ones thanks to the diversity of backgrounds within our friends and family.

At our gatherings, everything from Southern accents to Tagalog and Spanish can be heard amid all the laughter and fun. Joe is of Mexican descent, so we enjoy incorporating Mexican traditions and foods into our festivities throughout the year. Christmas celebrations and birthday parties sometimes see the introduction of unique cultural pastimes such as piñatas, mariachi music, and special recipes, such as posole, tres leches cake, and tamales. Of course, making holiday cookies and coloring Easter eggs every year with the nieces and nephews are never overlooked. Extended family in Mexico also gives us an excuse to visit and host from time to time.

Our Life Priorities

Just a Peck

Professionally, we both value and have careers in public service and we highly value serving the greater good of our communities.

Joe works for the Navy, and has been committed throughout his career to jobs which support the growth and sustainment of vibrant communities.

Adam is an auditor who works for Congress, reviewing federal programs and finding ways to make them work more efficiently and achieve their goals.

While our careers are important to us, we're quite lucky to work for organizations that afford a good balance of work and home life. Both of our places of work are nearby, offer flexible working hours, and even allow us to work from home. This enables us to spend even less time commuting and spend more time with each other. In the future, we hope to spend this time helping with homework, riding bikes through our historic neighborhood, and visiting the playground at the end of our street.

Our House and Neighborhood

Home Sweet Home

We live in a safe and family-friendly neighborhood, home to many school-age children, all in the heart of our city. Every school day, a small army of kids and parents walk, bike, scooter, and roller-skate to our fantastic neighborhood school. School carnivals, 10K runs, and festivals put on by the PTA take place throughout the year and show the commitment of neighborhood parents. American flags fly beside those of other nations on front porches, the sign of foreign military families stationed here for a few years at the nearby Navy base. The fall brings neighborhood tailgating and street parties on home game days for the nearby Old Dominion University Monarchs.

We live in a charming Cape Cod house, centered around a frequently used living room space, four bedrooms, a cozy kitchen for Adam to let loose in while whipping up a culinary masterpiece for friends and family, and a large deck to enjoy relaxing under the trees. A friendly park is just down the street, including a playground where neighborhood children play and take advantage of the open space for a pick-up game or running around.

Our Extended Families

At Our Niece's Quinceanera

We are both from Virginia and are surrounded by a large and supportive family who gather regularly and are eager to welcome a child into our traditions of holidays, birthdays, and family trips. We live near our parents, siblings, and nieces and nephews, and enjoy spending quality time with them. Our parents are excited to have another grandchild to spoil and love. Adam has two brothers locally who are raising young children of their own and look forward to another playmate. Joe has two siblings, one who is nearby with three children who are equally ecstatic about bringing another cousin into their circle. Long-time friends are also nearby to lend additional support. We live close to the beach, and enjoy weekends lounging on the sand and playing in the water with friends and family. Even when it's too chilly to lounge in the sand, we find ways to enjoy the season with friends and family, from pumpkin carving at Halloween to making cookies at Christmas.

Adam's Family

From Us to You

Hi! We're Adam and Joe, and we're excited to introduce ourselves to you. You're considering a monumental decision, and we have enormous respect for you for considering adoption. Our close families have demonstrated to us the joys and the tears involved in raising a family, and we've looked into our hearts and found ourselves ready for the challenge. We're so eager to share our lives with a child and our experiences of the world around us. We're eager to teach while at the same time excited to see the world through a child's eyes and learn alongside them. We'd like to tell you a little about who we are and what kind of parents we hope to be.

We met over 10 years ago, and we've been inseparable ever since. We both love traveling and jump at every opportunity to explore new cities and countries, try new foods, and learn about other cultures. So far, we’ve traveled to Spain, Chile, Uruguay, Mexico, Canada, and Ireland together, as well as all over the United States. We think travel is one of the best ways to get to know yourself and explore your place in the world, and we hope to fill our child's early years with a broad exposure to the world around them.

We both have government jobs, and while we’re proud of each other's accomplishments, we place a strong value on work/life balance. Our jobs match up pretty well with our personalities: as an urban planner, Joe makes detailed preparations for everything, including our vacations, while as an analyst, Adam likes to get to the root of the problem and come up with solutions as quickly as possible. Our careers in public service stem from a concern for the greater good, and we hope to instill the same in our child and help him or her find their own special way to improve the community we call home. We value fairness, respect for differences, empathy, and compassion, and while we're far from perfect, we will do our very best to model these values every day.

We are surrounded by nearby loved ones, both a large family and a core group of close friends, who will provide additional support as we begin this journey. All of our loved ones are enthusiastic about our family plans and we feel strongly that we have a strong network that will provide a loving and nurturing environment to enable their growth and development. We offer a web of family and friends that will love and accept a child with open arms and welcome him or her into our varied traditions. Our child will grow up with role models from many backgrounds, which we hope will instill in them confidence and the ability to relate and respect people wherever the world takes them.

We have the deepest respect for you and the choice you're contemplating. We want you to know that we're excited to share letters and pictures, emails, and if you would like, phone calls and perhaps a visit from time to time. Should you choose to start this journey with us, please know you will always hold a very special place in our hearts, and we will share that with our child at every opportunity.
