Why We Chose Adoption

Just Enjoying Each Other

Before we got married, we knew we wanted to fill our home with at least two children. After a few years of struggling to get pregnant, we were blessed with Luke. There is no explanation for our infertility except that our path to completing our family is supposed to be different than pregnancy.

In November 2017, Sarah's job brought her into contact with a 14-year-old girl who was being adopted by a wonderful, loving family after a very difficult childhood. While thinking of the little girl on Saturday night, Sarah googled "adoption" and learned that it was "National Adoption Week." Around the same time, Dan was praying about the way to complete our family. We truly believe this combination of events brought our hearts to know adoption is the path God wanted us to walk down.

We announced in our family "Christmas Letter" that we would be growing our family through adoption. The joy of sharing the news with our family at Christmas time made the holiday even more special. The excitement about meeting our new child fills our house on a daily basis. The stress of infertility struggles has vanished now that we have embraced our journey to adopt.

Our Lifestyle

Feeding Giraffes at the Zoo

During the week, most nights are spent out in the yard or on the deck reading and playing board games. Our nightly routine includes bedtime stories with the whole family (even our dog occasionally) gathered in Luke's bed. We always sing a few songs, and kiss Luke goodnight telling him we love him with all of our hearts.

A few weekends a month we enjoy visits to see grandparents or our siblings and their children. Other weekend activities we often enjoy are trips to see the minor league baseball team play, enjoying a nearby zoo or our local park/beach/playground.

Sarah loves to go on adventures and explore new places. Dan loves to enjoy peaceful home time and the many activities within a few miles of our house. This allows us to have a really great balance in our lives.

Most important to us is togetherness as a family. As a couple, we enjoy each other's company immensely and are best friends. Our lives are focused on ensuring our family is happy and living life to the fullest.

We go to great lengths to make every day special, filling our lives with big belly laughs. Our family is our 'home team.' Other families may have more money, more possessions and better looks; but no one has more love and laughter in their home than us.

Cultural Diversity

Grandma & All Her Great Grandkids

Fortunately, we come from families who demonstrate in their daily lives a love for individuals who are of a different race. Your child will find themselves at family gatherings with cousins and close family friends who share their skin color. When we shared the news of adopting a child of another race, the excitement was fully embraced by those most important to us.

Our home is a place where each individual's uniqueness is celebrated. We intend to honor the unique identity of our child and support the child as they develop into their own individual.

We recognize that the world we live in is not always fair or kind. Our foremost job as parents is to keep our children safe. We will ensure that your child is aware of the realities of our world and learns tools to handle what the world can throw at us.

Education and exposure are two ways we will make sure your child never feels isolated culturally. We promise our family and home is a place of love and welcoming of your child's diversity.

Our current favorite children's books are by Ezra Jack Keats. His stories are set in a big city and feature an African American hero "Peter" and his friend "Archie", and follow them on adventures in their very diverse community. While our neighborhood may not look like that world, it is important to us that the beautiful colors of those characters and their environment are incorporated into our home.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home - Huge Yard, Privacy & a Mountain View

We live in a rural, mountainous area in Pennsylvania. Our house is nestled in the woods in a private community. We spend lots of time outside enjoying all four seasons whether it's sledding on our hill, jumping in leaf piles, playing baseball in the yard, or spending time on our deck. Almost every day in the fall, we watch deer pass through our yard.

Our town has an annual music festival, waterfalls and national park in walking distance and summer farmer's market. We love our annual Halloween parade around town and party with friends before taking all the kiddos trick or treating. We are less than two hours from several large metropolitan areas with zoos, museums and cultural activities.

There is a huge park 5 minutes from our house with a brand new playground, a large lake with fishing docks and a white sand beach. On summer days, we swim and then enjoy picnics under the shady trees. The playground is especially fun with its treehouse fort and binoculars for watching the wildlife. Often, bald eagles soar over us as we play!

We have a spacious 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom home with 2 acres of yard. As an infant, your child will have a nursery connected to our master bedroom. The cozy family room is filled with lots of windows and sunshine. We can often be found here having movie night, eating pizza, playing Go Dino (our version of Go Fish) or sprawled out on the floor being goofy and petting our dog.

Our Extended Families

Christmas With Uncle Lew

Family is our everything. Providing our children with a foundation of “family first” is very important to us and exactly how we were raised. We each have 3 siblings. We love that our children will grow up with so many strong, healthy role model Uncles and Aunties to look up to and cousins to play with.

Sarah's Family

We have a large extended family within a 1 hour drive. Sarah's 90-year-old Grandmother Patricia has 27 great grandchildren and the family keeps growing! Thanksgiving dinner is a special tradition in Sarah's family when our huge family gathers at Grandma's for a family visit and practically takes over a local hotel for a pizza party by the indoor pool and sleepover.

We are very lucky to have our very own Santa Claus in our family. Dan's Uncle Lew is a well known local Santa, who appears in parades, commercials and events throughout the state. He also makes an appearance at our house where all the kids get special time with the jolly old elf before Christmas day.

This summer Sarah's family will share a week "down the shore" at a big beach house, where we will also celebrate a wedding! Every summer Dan's family spends several weekends at cottage on a nearby lake for laughs around the campfire and delicious food cooked by Grandma Honey.

From Us to You

Here we are in this unexpected, unfamiliar moment where our world has intersected with yours. As foreign as this is, we are thrilled to introduce and welcome you to our family. Our paths have lead us to each other, so it is important you know about the journey we have been on to get to you.

We married 7 years ago after dating for 3 years. Our marriage is the best thing that ever happened to us individually. We are best friends and partners in crime as we journey through life.

We both come from large families, each of us with 3 brothers. Our childhoods were filled with the comfort of having a mother who stayed at home raising us and a father who worked hard to provide. We are very close to our families. Our parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces/nephews, cousins and grand mothers are all so excited about the prospect of a new baby to shower with unconditional love.

Professionally, we both share a dedication to helping children in our community through our daily jobs as a child abuse prosecutor and juvenile probation officer. We are quite a sight to see when we head to the courtroom together to fight to make life better for children! Our jobs are very fulfilling, but our identity and focus of life is family.

The moment of Luke's entry into our family four years ago was by far, the most spectacular moment of our lives. We cannot wait to savor those moments again with another child. Being parents fulfills us in ways we couldn't have predicted. The love we have for Luke overwhelms us and guides us through even those difficult moments of toddler tantrums or icky stomach bugs. We know that welcoming a new child into our family will multiply the joy in our lives and the world.

Luke will be the best big brother and protector of his new sibling. We have felt very sad about not being able to provide him with a sibling earlier due to infertility struggles. We have introduced the idea of adoption to Luke and he now tells us several times a week "I can't wait to have a baby brother or sister." Just today he promised to teach his new sibling how to climb! We will probably put the brakes on that skill for a while, but encouraging the siblings to explore the world together fills us with excitement for the future.

We are adventurous as a family, both in our local community by hiking and exploring all the local playgrounds, mountains and waterfalls, but also seeking out new cities, museums, beaches. We love to laugh, race and wrestle. (There is a championship belt up for grabs!) Most importantly, we read stories and pray together every night, thanking God for all our many blessings.

We promise to be open and honest about adoption and the wonderful, difficult choice you made for your child. We will honor you and your choices, if you wish, to stay connected via phone and email communication, picture and letter updates, as well as the opportunity for us to see each other again someday in person. The responsibility to raise a child is a huge one. We promise to give our everything to make every dream of your child become a reality.

There is so much more to say, but for now, please know we are in full, loving support and admiration of you. We will continue to keep you in our prayers every night and hope your life is full of peace.

With love,

Dan & Sarah
