Matt & Mary Ann
First and foremost hello and a warm hug! There are many things we want to say but most of all we want you to know that we appreciate you and admire your bravery. We are very grateful for you and want to thank you for your consideration as we cannot wait to share our home with this child.
Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other
As cliché as it most likely sounds, we truly complement each other.
Mary Ann loves that Matt is steady as a rock, athletic, great with numbers, handy, a natural planner, and always down to throw something on the grill or hit the trails. There is no doubt Matt is going to be such a fun, active, and selfless dad.
Matt loves that Mary Ann is so creative and generous — for example, she is always willing to find thoughtful gifts for her family and friends, frequently "just because." Mary Ann is unbelievably fun and always willing to take on an adventure. She is a pusher for greatness and encourages others around her to always live their best life.
Together, there hasn't been a challenge we haven't been able to get through. Of course we've had our doubts at times, but we've always managed to support each other and persevere through the more trying times. Both of us are extremely grateful for the other.
Our Leisure Time
We enjoy everything outdoors from running, biking, hiking, and camping to hanging on our back deck playing cards and grilling. We can't wait to share our love for these activities with a child — as well the sports we loved (and still love) playing as kids — soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field, tennis, and flag football.
We love traveling and always make time every year to travel somewhere new. Matt and Mary Ann both learn best by doing — you can read about other places but we've found there is nothing like experiencing other cultures firsthand. It is magical. Some of our best memories together are through our travels and we so very much look forward to taking your child to places they become curious about.
Music is also important to us. Matt is a self-taught guitar and piano player. You will almost always find us listening to music while we cook dinner — there may or may not be impromptu dance-offs. We can't wait for a little one to show us how it is really done.
We also love spending time with our friends and family. Holidays are spent on a ranch with Mary Ann's family or in the mountains with Matt's family. We go to the beach with both families every summer. Hanging with Mary Ann's family is like instant summer camp — with such a large families you will find the kids building forts, going horseback riding, playing games like foursquare and basketball, practicing musical routines they just came up with — all in 24 hours. It is pretty special. With Matt's family, we go hiking, ride bikes, play board games, and often settle in for the evening watching a family movie.
Why We Chose Adoption
Family is everything to us. We both come from close-knit families and always knew we wanted to be parents, to share our family traditions with another generation as well as start some of our own. We truly believe when one door closes another door opens — we are beyond excited to grow our family through adoption. To us, adoption is an act of love by all involved. We will cherish and celebrate the child's complete story every step of the way. The child will know they are special because they are loved by so many.
Adoption is not foreign to either of our families as we both have extended family members we are close to who were adopted. Both of our families can't wait to love another itty-bitty and participate in their life.
Our House and Neighborhood
Our neighborhood is close to downtown and within walking distance to kid-friendly museums, parks, restaurants, community swimming pools, tennis courts, and many other entertainment venues.
We live in a four-bedroom, two-story house (built in 2016) — but our favorite "room" is our backyard with a porch that has a portion that is screened-in and a portion that is fully open. You will frequently find us there grilling out. The front yard and back yard are great for playing. We can't wait to have an excuse to build a treehouse.
Our neighborhood is full of children of many different ages. In the evening you will see a lot of families walking dogs or gathering in a neighbor's front yard catching up. We are also within walking distance of an excellent elementary school that most neighborhood children attend. Additionally, our city is full of impressive parks and we frequent them to run, hike, and bike.
Our Extended Families
Mary Ann grew up on a ranch so being outdoors is built-in to the family's DNA — not to mention Mary Ann has a lot of siblings so now that most are married with families of their own, it is an extra big group and never dull. When we are all together there is endless eating and playing be it tag football, basketball, foursquare, soccer, horseback riding, runs — honestly, the list is endless. We joke that getting together with Mary Ann's family is like an "instant summer camp" and the family motto is "The More The Merrier" so everyone is really excited to add another itty-bitty to the ever-growing crew.
Matt grew up with one older sister, who is now married with 3 children. We are able to enjoy our time with them around the holidays as it's difficult to see them regularly since they live on the other side of the country. Matt's parents live about an hour away and we get together with them regularly, spending time in the mountains, beach, or running a road race together. Matt has one cousin on his mother's side of the family who was adopted so the process is not foreign to them. They could not be more excited for us as we begin our life with a child.
From Us to You
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to introduce ourselves. We are Mary Ann and Matt. We have been married for eight years. There is not one word to describe how excited we are to grow our family through adoption. We all have our journeys ?" we don't always know where we are going or why things go as they do ?" until we get there. We know this is where we need to be.
Although we haven't formally met, it is not lost on us the difficulty of the decision you are working through. We want you to know we have tremendous respect ?" the courage and selflessness you must have is admirable. And it would be an honor to love and raise this child.
We live in a fun and vibrant neighborhood full of families young and old, just a few minutes from a growing downtown. In the mornings you will see neighbors walking their dogs and getting their little ones ready for school. In the evenings you will see families walking their dogs or heading to one of the many nearby parks or restaurants.
Both our front yard and backyard will be great for adventures ?" the truth is, we've been waiting for an excuse to build a treehouse in our backyard. We spend the warm months grilling out on our back deck and the colder months around our fire pit making s'mores.
Education is something we take very seriously. Both our parents gave us the gift of a quality education and we will, without a doubt, do the same. The schools in our area are great. Our 9-year-old neighbor frequently walks to school with her parents. We look forward to a similar routine.
We were both raised in close-knit families. Mary Ann grew up on a ranch in a large family and Matt grew up in a university town near the mountains. We both can't wait to share family traditions with a little one who will have so many aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins to show him/her the ropes from our rendition of Happy Birthday and why we read the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July to where the "Kids Only Hideouts" are and how to ride a horse.
We are an adventurous and curious duo ?" perhaps a little quirky too. Matt is an engineer who loves to tinker and build things. Mary Ann is both a dreamer and doer with a small business.
In our spare time you will most likely find us outdoors. We are surrounded by so many parks that are literally just minutes from our house. After work, Mary Ann frequently goes on a run and Matt is either joining Mary Ann on a run or mountain biking. At least weekly we attend a workout class together. We are also lucky to live in a city that is only three hours from the mountains and two hours from the beach and we frequent both.
Dinner time is an important time of day for us. We always make dinner together. (We'd be totally embarrassed if there was a camera watching us cook dinner as there is usually impromptu dancing.) Growing up, we both ate dinner every night with our families, as a family unit. This is a tradition we want to continue in our home.
We feel blessed and fortunate to be at a place in our lives where we can promise to give this little one(s) everything they need to thrive. We are happy to share photos and letters of their progress with you too.
Thanks again for reading about us. We would love to hear from you and wish you all the best,
Matt & Mary Ann
