Wayne & Thea
Thank you. We wanted those to be the first two words you read from us. Adoption has been in our hearts for a long time, and we believe it is a beautiful and loving choice. We also have a 5-year-old daughter who wants nothing more than to be a sister! We are so excited to grow our family through adoption and thank you so much for reading our profile!
Our lifestyle is busy, but centered around family first. We both work full time in very rewarding jobs. Wayne is in the Navy, so our family talks a lot about service, and service to our country is a big part of our lives. We have met many of our very best friends through the Navy and would not trade this experience! Thea is a lawyer and also loves being able to serve others through her job. As the mother of a daughter, it is also really important to Thea to set an example that women can accomplish anything, in the home, in the workforce, and anywhere they want! Our family is the most important part of our lives, and we are thrilled to have found a loving, faith-based preschool where our daughter currently attends school and where this child will as well. Our weekends are all about family, and you can often find us at the zoo, the botanical garden, the beach (just about 20 minutes from our house!), or the children's museum. We also LOVE to travel as a family. From quick weekend trips to the mountains or to visit friends to week-long adventures at Disney World and trips to Europe, we love to see the world through children's eyes and will always cherish our time traveling with our kids! Wayne is also an avid runner, and we enjoy traveling to support him in his races (most recently the New York City Marathon!).
Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other
Thea admires Wayne's perseverance and dedication. He has clearly shown these qualities serving in our nation's military for nearly 20 years, but he shows them in so many ways every day. After enlisting in the Navy right out of high school, he worked tirelessly to get a college degree, then to go on to get a master's degree even while working full time and parenting a toddler. His graduation was such a proud day for our family. We also share all parenting and household duties 100%, and Wayne sets an incredible example for our daughter of what equality and respect look like. He also has a wonderful sense of humor and can ALWAYS make us laugh!
Wayne admires Thea's intelligence, patience, and determination. Thea was a teacher before she became a lawyer, and she is so patient with our young daughter and so good at teaching her all kinds of things. It is a joy to watch her be a mother. Thea has also shown amazing determination as she has built and maintained a legal career even while supporting Wayne's military career. Our moves have meant that she has taken the bar exam in three different states, but she remains committed to her profession of service and recently was promoted to a principal at her firm! She is truly the best role model for our daughter and will be for this child as well.
Our Family Traditions
We have a lot of family traditions we really enjoy. On a daily basis, we enjoy sitting down to dinner as a family to talk about the day and simply be together. Every fall, we take a weekend trip to our favorite fall festival in northern Virginia. It's about a four-hour drive, so we spend the whole weekend, visit friends, and enjoy the season. We go on a hayride, and there are huge slides and play areas for kids, plus lots of animals, pumpkins, and live music to enjoy. It's an annual favorite!
We also spend the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with Thea's family each year, and we cherish that time spent decorating cookies, driving around to see holiday lights, opening gifts by the fire, and enjoying each other. We have even bought some Christmas decorations already for the child we will adopt - we bought matching ones years ago, knowing one day we would find the child we are meant to adopt. We also go caroling in our neighborhood every December! One of the things we love about being a military family is that we also have so many opportunities to meet new people and make new traditions!
Our Extended Families
We are very close with Thea's parents and sister. Thea's and her mom's birthdays are one day apart, and every year we take a joint trip to Atlanta with Thea's parents to celebrate. Tori loves swimming in the pool at the hotel with her daddy and her "Opa." We also go to an Atlanta Braves game each year and often visit the Georgia Aquarium (which is also where we got engaged almost 10 years ago!).
About every other year we also take a summer trip to Missouri to visit Thea's sister, who is a social worker there. Last Fall, ALL of us gathered in Asheville, North Carolina for a long weekend filled with art, food, and family fun!
Travel is something we all love. Last Fall, Thea's parents joined us in New York City when Wayne ran the NYC marathon! We enjoyed all the sites, and Tori especially loved going to a fancy tea with Thea and "Oma." Most recently, Oma and Opa also joined us at Disney World!
Oma and Opa are excited to welcome another grandchild to the family, and, together with Thea's sister, will be a big part of your child's life.
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a beautiful, family friendly neighborhood in Virginia. There are many families with children, and our neighborhood holds annual parades for the Fourth of July (with a firetruck!) and for Halloween (where the kids wear their costumes). There is also a children's Christmas party every year complete with visit from Santa, a 5K "Turkey Trot" run each November, and caroling in the neighborhood every December. We participate in all of these events each year!
Our house is two stories, with four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. We love that we have enough space for a playroom! It has tons of windows and high ceilings and is a great space to play and learn. We also have a piano we inherited from Thea's grandmother. Thea loves to play while Tori sings and dances, and Tori hopes to take lessons soon, too. Our favorite room is the living room where we gather to play board games, do puzzles, and have family movie nights. During the winter, we often have the gas fireplace on, and it feels so warm and cozy!
We are also VERY close to our neighborhood pool and love that we can walk there on summer days. We have so much fun there and can't wait to share it with another child! Our neighborhood is full of sidewalks and even has a playground, and we can often be found out walking and teaching our daughter to ride her bike. There are even a couple of peacocks that live in our neighborhood, which is a lot of fun!
From Us to You
We are so appreciative that you are reading our profile and taking the time to learn more about us! We have known for a long time that we wanted to grow our family through adoption, and we have talked and dreamed about it for as long as we've been married. Although we have a biological child, we know in our hearts that her sibling is meant to join our family through adoption. And she truly cannot wait to be a big sister!
Though we have wanted to adopt for so long, we have waited until we felt the time was right. We have waited until we felt our daughter was old enough to understand this process and to play a very special part in welcoming this child to our family. We have waited until our family is very well established. We have been married almost 10 years and have endured all of the ups and downs of marriage, parenthood, and military service. We can say with certainty that we can weather any storm. We have waited until we have a high degree of financial security. We have waited, and we are ready with open hearts, minds, and arms to meet you and your baby.
We can only imagine what you might be feeling right now - maybe nervous, anxious, excited, or even afraid. But mostly, we believe you are brave and loving. We believe you are choosing adoption out of love for your child, and we can promise you that we will always talk about this adoption as something that grew out of love. We will never speak negatively about adoption to your child. We are excited to send letters and pictures to you as your baby grows. We are truly excited to be on this journey with you. And we hope you read some things in our profile that might give you some comfort, hope, and reassurance about the journey ahead.
We want you to know that education is very important to us, and we will provide your child with every educational opportunity we can. We promise to read books to your baby every day from the first day we meet him or her. We believe in early childhood education that is focused on learning through play, and we prefer faith based preschools. We will provide that environment to your child. When your child is ready to start school, we will consider both private and public schools and find the right fit. We intend to pay for your child's college education, and we will save money for that purpose throughout his or her childhood. We both believe that our own educational backgrounds have provided us with so many opportunities, and we feel fortunate to be able to provide for our children's educations.
We want you to know, without a doubt, that we will provide a home full of love and laughter. We have one child already, so we know what kind of parents we are, and we are ready to welcome this baby with open arms. We also promise to share with this child our love of travel, and to share as many places and experiences as we can. We see traveling with children as a blessing, so whether it is a weekend at the beach or a trip to Europe, we prefer to take our children with us. We love to see the world through the eyes of a child. And we promise to keep you updated through pictures and letters throughout your child's growing up.
We want you to know your child also has extended family members - grandparents, an aunt, cousins, so many friends, and the best and most excited big sister - who are so supportive of this adoption journey and so excited to meet this child. We promise you that love will be at the core of every parenting decision we make. We promise to let your child know that love was at the core of this adoption. We promise to be the best parents and role models we can be, and we make that promise for a lifetime.
Thank you so much for considering our family.
