Adoption in Our Lives

Having Fun Together Outdoors

Sarah: In 2001, I drove home to northern Virginia for the Thanksgiving holiday to celebrate with my mom and she told me about having placed a baby girl for adoption when she was 16, ten years before I was born. She had made her information available at the adoption agency and Diane, my half-sister, had reached out to her a month earlier. We made arrangements for Diane to come visit for a long weekend the following month. Diane and my mom, her birth mother, are very close. We all talk fairly often and see each other at family gatherings.

We will be very open about the adoption. We want our child to understand where they came from and that we were chosen as their adoptive parents. If our child wants to know more about their family history or culture, we will embrace their request with an open heart and open arms and answer any questions surrounding their birth story. For us, the most important thing is that our child understands we love them always and forever and that their adoption plan was made by their birth mother with love and strength. We want them to feel safe, supported, and loved as they grow up and ask about their birth family.

What it Means to Become Parents

Breakfast With Friends

Being parents means everything to us. Our number one priority is to provide support and unwavering love to a child. We are looking forward to reading books together, making pancakes, participating in after-school activities, singing songs, going on road trips, and all of the family time in between.

Downtown With Our Friends' Little One

Most of all, we are looking forward to giving a child someone to depend on, being by their side on the first days of school, and sharing in all of the special moments that peak their hobbies and interests.

We are over the moon excited to become a teacher and guide to a child. We have an abundance of joy in our hearts to share with a little one and are thrilled about the possibilities ahead. From greeting our child every morning with hugs and laughter to rocking them asleep when they're not feeling well, we are looking forward to being inspired by them as well as inspiring them with all this world has to offer.

Our Most Memorable Moment

Our most memorable moment is our 2006 hiking adventure to Machu Picchu in Peru, where we got engaged. It was our first trip outside of the USA together. After checking in with our parents from an internet café in Lima, we flew to Cusco. We spent the solstice dancing in the streets and learning about the Incan traditions based on the harvest seasons. The transit system was on strike, which meant there were no busses or trains headed to Machu Picchu. We wound up working with our tour guide to create a special trip to get us to the top. We drove eight hours over night up the Andes Mountains. As the sun rose, we started our five hour hike through coffee bean and banana farms. Eventually, we made it to the sacred lost village. At the top of the peak, among the wild orchids and llamas, we committed to spending the rest of our lives together.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in a small suburb outside of Denver, Colorado towards the mountains. Our school system has some of the highest equivalency test scores in the nation for grades 1- 12. There are more than 300 blue-sky days per year here. Our city has 24 parks, 274 acres of open space, four lakes and more than seven miles of creek trail.

We have swimming pools and hot springs around every corner, just a bike ride away. On weeknights, we ride our bikes to the mountains, just 5 miles away. We are very close to Red Rocks Amphitheater and enjoy picnics, hikes, yoga, and music from the hilltops. We have three parks with playgrounds less than a quarter mile from our house. The schools are a mile away.

We live on a quiet street, surrounded by families and children riding bikes and playing hockey. We have four bedrooms and two baths. Our fenced in back yard has four Aspen trees and many blooming bushes.

We live down the street from the community recreation center, cultural center, and five churches. We are part of the 'Live Local' community supporting local businesses. We participate in the annual music festival, bike rides, and community movie nights. Our neighbors have goats, llamas, and chickens and we get our eggs fresh from our friends.

When it snows, we have a hill nearby our house for sledding and some ice skating rinks. We are an hour from the ski resorts. The soccer fields are up the street from us and the gymnastics studio is a mile away next to the bagel bakery.

Our Extended Families

Sunshine With Loved Ones

We both grew up in northern Virginia and went to the same high school. We have family in Colorado, Florida, Arizona, Maryland, New York, Oregon, and California. When we get together, we play cards and board games, go to sporting events and the movies, ride bikes around the park, and swim in their backyard pools.

Our cousins and their children live 30 minutes away from us. We spend Thanksgivings with them in the mountains, going to the parade, playing board and card games by the fire and taking out the ATVs for a little adventure.

With Family in Virginia

For Christmas, we split time between Florida, California, and Arizona. We really enjoy traveling to our family's houses for some sunshine and swimming. Every year, we cook meals as a family, bake apple pies, make our favorite cherry chocolate pudding parfaits, decorate Christmas cookies, and go to the movie theater together.

During the summers, we take road trips to various national parks. Our parents come out for summer visits during their cross-country road trips as well. For July 4th, we go to Washington, D.C. or a baseball game for fireworks.

From Us to You

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and consider us as the parents for your child. We appreciate how difficult of a decision this is and we believe that such a courageous decision can only be made out of love.

We are Sarah and Kyle from colorful Colorado. We are an adventurous couple that love to travel (having visited more than 20 countries and 30 states); enjoy the outdoors (skiing, biking, camping, and hiking); and have a passion for music and the arts. It is our sincere wish to welcome a child into our family with love, laughter, security and joy.

We have been married for 12 years and together for 21. We met in our home town in Virginia and dated throughout college until we got married in the mountains of Colorado. We both come from stable and loving families who have encouraged us to try new things and live life to the fullest, and we will do the same for our child.

We love to travel to lakes, mountains, and parks together. In our spare time, we enjoy exploring the great outdoors and fostering our passions and hobbies like snowboarding, bike riding, dancing, playing guitar, hiking, camping, rock climbing, cooking and painting. In the evenings, we work on perfecting the recipes in our mom's cookbooks or relaxing with a good book or TV show.

Although, we have an active and fulfilling life together, we feel that a very important piece is still missing; our family is not yet complete. Due to fertility issues, we are not able to have biological children. An adoption is not only the perfect way to complete our family, but our happy path. We promise to raise our child with unconditional love, compassion, an excellent education, and a sense of adventure.

We are ready to welcome a child into our family with open hearts and open arms. We are looking forward to so many things about parenthood, but to name a few, reading books and singing lullabies before bed, riding bikes around the parks, doing homework, Science Fair projects, soccer and baseball games, teaching our child to swim, dance recitals, road trips with pie shop stops along the way, building snowmen, theme park family vacations, ice cream sundae movie nights, making school lunches, and building sand castles at the beach.

We want to respect your privacy and your choice, but also want to leave the door open for contact. We are open to as much or as little contact as you are comfortable with, including but not limited to phone calls, emails, letters, pictures, and anything else you can think of. For us it is important that our child has the ability to learn about their heritage.

For two people that enjoy learning about others rather than talking about ourselves, pouring our heart and soul on to these pages is not a simple task; but we wouldn't change a thing about this experience. We've been by each other's side every step of the way and are better for it.

As you choose the right adoptive parents and home for your child, we want to express our sincerest gratitude for considering us in your adoption plan. This special gift means more to us than words can describe. Our child will always know that you made this decision out of love, a decision that will always have our utmost respect.

With all our love,

Kyle & Sarah
