Why We Chose Adoption

With Daisy

We don't have biological children, but we are lucky to be actively involved in the raising of many of our 15 nieces and nephews, 10 of which live near us. We enjoy spending time with kids, and the sense of fun, wonder, and humor they bring to everyday life. Kids are funny, and they tell it to you like it is…whether you're ready to hear it or not! John went to college to be a teacher because of his love of working with kids, and taught Kindergarten and 5th grade while earning his bachelors' degree. We have also hosted 25+ exchange students in our home 2014-2018, and loved the cultural exchange and being able to be "parents" to a teenage student, even if it was only for a short time. We formed a close bond with Daisy, a Chinese exchange student who lived with us 3 years while she was in high school 2015-2017. We continue to act as her parents while she attends college an hour away from us now, even though we are no longer legally her guardians. To us, she is our child, even though we have no biological bond. Being there to guide her and act as witnesses as she matured into an amazing young woman, and also re-experience the joys of young adulthood through her eyes, confirmed even more strongly for us our desire to become parents via adoption.

Our Leisure Time

We Love to Be Active!

Cynthia loves to read, and has stacks of books saved from her own childhood to read with a child. John loves comics, and can't wait to share his love of superheroes (especially Spiderman)! We have found a healthy balance to weight struggles by embracing various forms of exercise, as well as learning to cook. John is a 4th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do and Jeet Kun Do, and looks forward to sharing his love of martial arts. Cynthia developed a love of walking and running for exercise, and has participated in dozens of road races such as 5ks and 10ks in the last 6 years. She eventually worked up to completing 8 half marathons and then a full marathon in 2017! John is not a fan of running, but is super supportive and participates by walking the shorter races – he even won a trophy at a 10k! Cynthia loves to cook new healthy recipes and has helped John develop a tolerance for, if not love of, vegetables. We also volunteer in our community together for various charities. Service to community is important to us, and something we will share with this child.

Our Lifestyle

Hiking in the Arizona Desert

We are living our best lives while we wait for the blessing a child will bring, and are casual and comfortable people. We have a dining room, and we use it, but we are usually wearing jeans or PJ's. It took us 6 months to shop for the perfect replacement couch because it had to a) fit our den b) have as many reclining seats as possible and c) be kid and pet friendly. Our home nickname includes the word Hotel – because we frequently have guests or family visiting, especially in the hot summer, to float in the pool. Folks afraid of a little dog fur shouldn't visit our home…because Cynthia's philosophy is you have two hands so you can pet two dogs. John has a reputation for putting on the best Christmas light display in the neighborhood (something he inherited from HIS mom). The neighborhood kids start asking him a week before Thanksgiving when the lights are going up, and he has been known to put up lights for nearby homes that couldn't put them up themselves. We are always planning our next vacation – Cynthia is a former military brat and loves to travel, and John has gone along for the ride. We have enough knick knacks our home looks lived in, but not so many it's suffocating. We cannot wait to share our sometimes hectic, but always joyful, life with a child.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in coastal Virginia 20 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, and often joke our neighborhood is in "Pleasantville" because it has a stereo-typical suburban feel to it. We are blessed to have a home built for entertaining and it is often the location of family get togethers. Twenty or 30 guests at a family party is our norm! We love being able to socialize with family and friends frequently to celebrate everyday life: birthdays, holidays, graduations, and sometimes just because!

Decked Out for Christmas

We have awesome neighbors and live in a community where children are always seen playing in front yards and biking in the neighborhood. In the summer, our neighborhood has weekly barbecues which are great opportunities to meet new people! John's Christmas and Halloween decorations are EPIC and have been a fun way to connect with our neighbors.

Our home is a five-bedroom, two-story home in a cul-de-sac. Nearly all of our neighbors have young children, and they frequently play in the cul-de-sac together. Cynthia works from home, so one of the bedrooms is a home office. Our back yard is made for fun, with a kids play set and an in-ground swimming pool. We purchased this home 8 years ago with the intent to build our family here, and we can't wait to include this child as part of that dream.

Our Extended Families

Stairway Full of Cousins

We are fortunate to live near our extended family members and their families. John's mother, sister and cousin live 20 minutes from us; Cynthia's brother is four miles away. We have 15 nieces and nephews, ranging from age 20 to 3 months! We cannot wait to have this child join us in our joyous and diverse family.

Celebrating Grandma's Birthday

John's cousin and his three daughters share John's love of superheroes, so they attend Comic-con events and mega movie openings together at every opportunity. Cynthia is very close to her younger brother - as former military brats, they were each other's first best friend after frequent moves. We've enjoyed welcoming his infant daughter to the family, and look forward to her first birthday party this spring! Cynthia's parents and John's oldest brother live in Florida, which has given us a great reason to plan regular vacations there.

John's sister and her husband are active parents to three little boys and live with John's mother, who helps care for them. We have family dinners together as often as possible and frequently attend the boys school activities and volunteer events as the cheering squad. Cynthia and John's sister trained for a half marathon last year (his sister's first!) and look forward to competing in a marathon relay together next Spring.

Our family is excited about our adoption plan and extremely supportive of a new addition. They are excited to welcome this child to our family through the gift of adoption, and making special memories together.

From Us to You

First, we want to thank you. Thank you for taking the time to review our profile, thank you for your bravery, and thank you for considering making an adoption plan. We can only imagine the waves of emotion you are going through right now. You are in our thoughts and prayers as you consider this difficult and important decision.

We are Cynthia and John, and we would be honored if you selected us to parent your child. With us, your child would grow up in a loving home, surrounded by a caring and diverse extended family. We were fortunate to meet and fall in love as freshmen in college, and have been married for over 16 years and together more than 23 years. Both of us have immediate and extended family which live near our home, including brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and a loving grandparent. Several of our nieces and nephews are around or well under a year old, so your child will have cousins around their own age.

Our home is in coastal Virginia 20 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. We live in a fun and safe neighborhood, with excellent paths for riding bikes, walking dogs, and generally just enjoying the outdoors. We are blessed to have close contact with many friends from our school days, as well as our large family. We enjoy throwing pool parties in the summer and having various family gatherings in the cooler months. We love to decorate our home for Halloween and Christmas, which has inspired some friendly decorating competitions which the neighborhood kids have come to enjoy annually! We are looking forward to welcoming your child and introducing them to our supportive friends, family, and neighbors.

We are big believers in trying new things, ranging from trying a new exercise, to enrolling in a cooking or crafting class, or taking trips to new places. We love to travel and explore new places and activities both inside and outside our local community. We plan to foster that same sense of curiosity about the world and its adventures in your child. The world is truly amazing through the eyes of a child; after all, it's all new and exciting to them!

A fun fact about us is we spent the last several years hosting various exchange students from China, Russia, Italy, France, and Spain. We learned as much from them as they did from us. This experience gave us a great opportunity to take care of many teenagers, and yes, we still want to raise children! We believe we have a lot to offer your child as parents throughout their entire life. From changing diapers and reading bed time stories, to helping with school projects and teaching them how to drive, to helping them pick out a prom dress or tuxedo for graduation, to helping them find their passions and choose an education and career path: we will be there to love and guide this child. We hope to include you in these milestones via pictures and letters, and would consider in person visits in the future as our relationship with you develops, to the extent you feel comfortable.

Your child's adoption story will be an important part of their life and we will ensure it is viewed as a positive aspect of their childhood. Your strength of character and caring will feature predominately in the story line. Without your compassion, we would not have the opportunity to fulfill our desire to raise a child in our home. We want to provide them a loving and supporting environment where they can learn and grow. Thank you again for your time and consideration, as we try to grow our family through adoption.
