Adoption in Our Lives

Our Family

When we were chosen by our child's birth mom, we were excited to learn that she wanted to speak with us prior to our child's birth. This provided an extra layer of confidence for all of us. For example, Mom was able to communicate her future wishes with us. For us as adoptive parents, it was so nice to talk with her and hear that she felt additional reassurance that she was making the right decision in choosing us to parent her child. American Adoptions was so supportive in arranging a phone call to help bring us all together. This started a positive relationship that continues to this day. We all keep in touch sharing pictures and frequent updates concerning our child's growth. We have so much respect for her decision to choose adoption, and we are committed to nurturing this relationship.

From day one we have been collecting keepsakes along the way and building a memory book for our daughter and all of us to look back upon. One of the highlights of this book includes a picture of her birth mother and her at birth. In addition, we read and share books with our child that address cultural diversity, multi-cultural family units, and adoptive families. Understanding every life situation is unique, we are happy that we have been able to establish and maintain a mutual relationship with our daughter's birth family that works best for us all.

Our Lifestyle

Snorkeling on the North Shore of Oahu

The two of us and our daughter are first and foremost family and friends people. We have weekly contact with our families and use live video conversations for those living further away.

In our neighborhood, we spend many evenings outside with family, friends, and their children in the community area behind our home. On weekends we love to go to go hiking, go to the beach, and try new restaurants.

A unique part of our lifestyle as well is when we use Jon's creativity combined with our woodworking skills to design and build beautiful furniture pieces for our home.

Overall, our lifestyle is very down to earth and family focused. We love hosting family and friends and we spend lots of time cooking, whether it's family heritage meals or a new cultural dish. We also enjoy spending time with our dogs, Diesel and Brody. We are so excited to add a second child to the family!

Cultural Diversity

Our Friends at Our Wedding

We are blessed to have a diverse set of lifelong friends that have been a tremendous support to us as a transracial family. The unique perspectives inherent in our group of friends provide us an opportunity to have a fuller life and new experiences. We cannot wait to raise an additional child with the same openness that has graced our lives. As an example, when our wedding photographer asked our best friends to gather for a photo right after the ceremony, the photo captured the beautiful diversity of our friends. With our daughter nearing two years old, our family and friends have embraced the cultural diversity that exists within our family. In addition to our family, having volunteered at orphanages, grade schools, high schools, and with disabled children, we have interacted with, taught, and learned from so many beautiful diverse children. We are excited to embrace the cultural background of this child and engage in community activities that celebrate their diversity.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We love living in the Aloha State of Hawaii. We are thankful to live on a military base where we are surrounded by families of all races and cultures. Being a strong community, we have not only supported many families with a new child but in return many families cannot wait to support this new child. We attend the frequent holiday and special events on base. For example, the lighting of the water tower at Christmas brings the larger community together, with lots of hot chocolate. With our immediate neighbors, we have multiple newborns and small children that we interact with daily. Jon is the fun, playful "uncle" to all the kids, and Matt is the "baby whisperer" who can calm any baby or child who is fussy or upset. We are so excited that there are children of all ages beginning with newborns in our neighborhood to grow up with your child.

Our home is perfectly suited for a child. We are writing this together in the living room with the dogs relaxing next to us. The nursery is across the hall from our room, and there is a third bedroom for frequent visitors. Our favorite room is the combined kitchen and living room where we can both cook or watch the other playing with the new baby. Directly behind our yard is a community playground where we frequently spend time with other parents and their children. Also our community offers elementary schooling, beaches, public parks, a family pool, a library, and family oriented activities.

Our Extended Families

Matt's Family

We have a large extended family that we love to experience new adventures with. Recently, we all spent time together at the beach and enjoyed snorkeling, finding many different fish and sea turtles. In addition to the beach time, we enjoyed hiking, visiting museums, and trying local restaurants.

With Our Niece & Nephew

One of the best things about our extended families is that we all love to cook. Whether it is a holiday or just a weekend night, we love sharing dishes that have been in the family for generations as well as exploring new recipes. We all enjoy exploring foods from different cultures. Beyond cooking, our families love to share everyday life experiences and our future goals. We enjoy fun activities such as playing catch, basketball, and playing card games.

During the holidays, we always spend time with our families. On one side, we love the Italian tradition of making homemade ravioli as the centerpiece. On the other side of the family, Mom always makes a traditional Dutch meal that includes creative leftover recipes to follow.

Our families are very excited and supportive about us building our family and introducing the newest addition. We both have tremendous support from our families and they look forward to showering this child with love.

From Us to You

Having been together for eight years and married for over five years, we have always wanted to build our family through adoption. Understanding that loving unconditionally is the foundation for any relationship, we take great pride in the love we share together and for family and friends. Also, stability for the child has been a priority, which is why we waited to reach out as adopting parents. We have been planning for years to complete our education, start careers, and establish family financial well-being to fully be able to support a growing family.

Living in a close community, we and our daughter have the unique opportunity to interact with newborns, toddlers, young, and older children often. Neighbor kids love to stop over from the playground behind our house for a glass of water or a healthy snack. Beyond these interactions, we have been asked by family members and friends to watch their children for as long as a week. The love and joy we received during these experiences solidified our desire to continue to grow our family. An additional benefit that we gained during full time care was reaffirming our communication skills as a couple. We know that our communication allows us to be consistent in our actions and will allow us to take better care of our future children.

Prior to our first adoption raising our two dogs was another parenting pre-test for us. They are wonderful loving Yorkies who also have taught us additional responsibility and patience. Much like our child, they need to be fed, played with, and bathed. We cook real food knowing that it is healthier for them. In a similar fashion, we have read multiple baby and toddler cookbooks and have been able to introduce healthy, whole foods to our daughter. We have cared for the dogs when they have been sick through the night, get up early when they need to go out, and are always cognizant of their needs. We have always faced these challenges as a couple, with constant communication and teamwork. We are enthusiastic that we have had these experiences, which have translated into having a happy and healthy family unit with our daughter.

Our enthusiasm for having a family and adopting our second child has already created an outflow of love from our family and friends. As an example, our friends who have adopted have supported us each step of the way and cannot wait for our children to become lifelong friends. Is has been a wonderful labor of love working together on the new nursery. Of course, with one of us being an interior designer, the nursery is a tranquil space perfect for a newborn.

Through our many years together, we know that we complement each other's strengths and weaknesses in each aspect of our lives. We are excited that all of our life experiences have prepared us for being the best daddies to support and love this newborn baby. We know that this choice is not an easy one for you; however, we want you to know that you will be completely loved and supported throughout this journey. We are committed to sharing photos and letters from the beginning and throughout the child's life. We are open to future visits as well. Thank you again for taking the time to get to know a little about us. We are open to share anything else you want to know about us and are so excited to welcome the little one into our home and our hearts.
