Shannon & Christie
We believe that parenting is the most important role any person can face in their life. Thank you for considering us for this important decision. We are so excited to expand our family through adoption and to go through this journey with you. We know this a tough decision, and we hope that in learning about us, you will feel that we are the best choice for you and your child.
What Made Us Who We Are Today
One of the biggest responsibilities we both had has children, was taking care of the various pets we would bring home (we were both animal lovers from a young age). When we met, we were on different roads that would eventually lead us to the same place. Christie finished undergrad and began working for a bank. She then finished graduate school and loved what she did ... but loved her rescue dogs more. Shannon worked at her family's business after school and then took a desk job for a dental firm. She also had two dogs and was struggling with one of them, so she went back to school for dog behavior and started her own business. When we met, Shannon trained Christie's dog and Christie helped Shannon with her business. We realized how much more we could do together and we started our own company caring and training for dogs. Our company grew and eventually we had several locations and 100 employees. We worked really hard every day, for the dogs we cared for, the clients who trusted us with their furry children, and to our employees to provide them all we could. We did what we love and were able to help so many families and pets in need. We recently sold our business to focus on our own family and to allow our company to grow to new levels. We stayed on as consultants and founders, which gives us the freedom to be at home and work when we want to. We are fortunate to be financially secure but know how much work over the last 15 years it took. We are forever grateful to our parents, who made sure to instill in us that to go far, you have to work hard and treat people with respect.
Cultural diversity is important to us because of how it has impacted us personally. Shannon is from a small town where everyone knew her name. She grew up in a more rural environment with her extended family close by. Christie's family immigrated to the U.S. in the late 60's. Most of her extended family is still in India or in other parts of the world. Her family, while not close in location, is very close and speaks frequently thanks to WhatsApp and Skype.
Our families were very traditional and religious. Religion and spirituality are important to us, however we have learned that everyone has different opinions, and that the most important thing is to be a good person and live in a way that is respectful to God. Neither of our families were excited (at first) to know that we had chosen someone of the same sex to be our partner in life, but family is the most important thing and we are blessed that our families embraced us more than religious ideals. With Christie's parents living with us, it has brought us even closer and we realize that cultural diversity isn't just about race, religion, or sexuality, but accepting people who are different and finding the similarities. Because it is such an important part of our lives, we would instill values of tolerance and acceptance to our child as well.
Fun Facts About Us:
Our House and Neighborhood
We live outside of a major city in Missouri within a small lake community. The great thing about living close to a major city is that it's easy to take part in the many festivals, the zoo, the science museum or our favorite place, The City Museum. The city is very diverse, and we love going out to try new types of cuisine or check out the cultural festivals that are held during the summer. Our immediate community is very nice because it is far enough away from the city to have a very spacious yard. We have a beautiful lake in our backyard that we love spending time on, whether it is to kayak, take the dogs paddle boarding, or just watching the fish and ducks. We love doing things outside and seeing all the wildlife. Our home is a spacious ranch with five bedrooms and plenty of room. There is a swimming pool outside that we love to have family and friends over to enjoy. The favorite room in the house is a big breakfast room that has giant windows overlooking the pool and lake. There is a family of deer that sleeps in our front yard and a beautiful owl that hoots at us each night. There are so many great parks and playgrounds close to our neighborhood that the possibilities for fun times are endless. Our home is also close to many great schools and we are surrounded by families with children who enjoy playing outside.
Our Extended Families
Shannon is the eldest in her family and has two younger sisters. Shannon's mom and sisters live just an hour away, and we get together often for dinner, shopping, and holidays. All of her extended family lives in the same town as her mom, not far from us. We have a great time having barbecues and playing with the kids and pets on Shannon's grandparents' lake. Recently, Christie's mom and dad moved in with us as they are getting older. Her mom is an amazing cook- we are lucky to be able to enjoy family dinners and hang out with our family in the kitchen almost every day. She has an older brother that lives in Texas and a sister that lives about 20 minutes away. Christie also is very close to her uncle's family and their children. They live in the same city and we get to see them frequently for family functions. Being close to our families is very important to both of us. All of our families are very excited about adoption because this child would be the first grandchild on both sides.
From Us to You
We are so grateful and humbled that you would take the time to get to know us. We understand that this is one of the biggest decisions that an expectant mother could ever be asked to make and are so grateful that you have chosen to learn about us.
We met at a Halloween party 10 years ago. Shannon was with friends and Christie had entered a costume contest with a friend. They were dressed as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and walked across stage with a stroller and a bunch of dolls. The moment Shannon saw Christie, she thought to herself, I have to meet that girl. We like to think that we both won that night, Christie won the costume contest and Shannon won the chance to go out and get to know an amazing woman. After dating for six years, we were married at a beautiful ceremony surrounded by friends and family.
We have moved through life as a team and love to say that we balance each other out. Christie was working in financial services and Shannon had her own business with big dreams. As we spent time getting to know each other, we realized we had a lot of the same dreams, goals, and most importantly, values. We started a business together and worked very hard to build it up and eventually sell it while always leaning on each other for both support and laughs when needed. We talked about our future often, and it always included children. We began trying through IUI and IVF. After a few failed attempts, we realized that it wasn't the path we wanted to continue. We began exploring adoption and realized that this was how we wanted to start our family and we began moving towards it. We know that having a child is a part of our life and we are committed to and excited to see it happen. We are fortunate to be at a place in our lives where we can both be at home and be dedicated to raising our family with our extended family very close to us. Often at family gatherings we are found surrounded by our family's children playing games, laughing and roughing around, and we can't wait to add a child of our own to that mix. Our families are very excited to be on the journey with us and are anxiously waiting.
We believe that the opportunity to raise a child and teach them to be a respectful, kind, amazing person is the greatest gift that anyone could ever be given. Both of us were raised by very hard-working parents who sacrificed everything for their children. They raised us with the same values and ideals they have, to work hard, be good people, love God, and laugh often. We hope to raise a child with the same values that were instilled in us.
Thank you for being so strong and courageous. We are excited to know that you will play a role, whatever you choose, in your child's life. Please know that we want you to be a part of this child's life and their growth into an amazing person to whatever extent that you feel comfortable. We are excited to keep you in the child's life with emails including pictures and updates and letters. We are eager to know you so that we can make sure your child has a healthy and happy understanding of your decision. We want your child growing up knowing that you loved them so much that you made the hardest and most selfless decision that could be made.
