Our Hopes for an Open Adoption

At a Park

As a gay couple, we know that for your child you will always be their mother. We hope to have an open and honest relationship with you as the child grows older year after year. For us, that means sending pictures and updates so that you will know first-hand how your child is doing in our home. From time to time, if you're open to it, we'd even love for all of us to visit you so you can see first-hand.

It's also very important for us that the child know about you and your history. We think it's such an important part of their identity! We hope to be able to learn about your own family traditions and incorporate some of those into ours--that way the child will be able to cherish something belonging to their own mother as the years go by. Ultimately, we hope that this will help your child feel connected to you and your family.

Our Leisure Time

Gideon Playing a Board Game

More than anything else, we are geeks. We love science fiction and fantasy—Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, all the superhero movies. We have a great group of friends with whom we regularly meet for dinner and board game nights. We find science and history articles super interesting.

Gideon runs twice a week and reads lots of fiction novels—he loves getting lost in the fantastical settings with castle politics and heroism. He wants to encourage a child to be imaginative as well.

Dallin Drawing on a Tablet

Dallin likes drawing and learning languages—he's currently taking Dutch lessons twice a week. We think it would be great for a child to learn another language. He also loves building things, and has a huge collection of elaborate Lego and puzzle sets.

We also love traveling! In 2018, we went to the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2019 we went to China and Hong Kong. What a culture shock that was! We think it's important for a child to experience different cultures and famous sites around the world.

While we are not very religious, we do like traditions—whether that means setting up a Christmas tree, lighting Hanukkah candles, or even things like taking the time to sit down and eat dinner together every night as a family.

Type of Education We Will Provide

We think it will be so important to provide a child with the best education possible so that they will grow up with the biggest chance of personal and professional success. When we built our new home, we made sure to pick an area that was known for high quality schools. That being said, we may explore a local private school, as there are a few private schools in the area that are especially well regarded for the best educational opportunities.

We will also want to encourage a child that it is not all about academic success--we want to help foster whatever he or she ends up being interested in—whether that is a particular sport, art, playing a type of instrument, or even something technical like computer coding.

For us, though, education really begins at home. It will be important for both of us to be involved with the child's schooling, homework, and extracurriculars, and to emphasize the importance of doing the best they can. We think instilling these values will ultimately help the child grow up to be a successful and happy adult!

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Beautiful New Home

We recently moved into a beautiful, modern home on a half-acre of land that we built with children in mind. There are four large bedrooms—plenty of room for everyone—with wood floors and lots of windows with white shutters and natural light. There's a big, grassy fenced-in back yard with trees and bushes that's perfect for playing in. Right behind our house is a sweet-smelling citrus grove and a wooded area that gives lots of nice shade.

We have two dogs—Loki and Samson. Both are mixed breeds, but Samson is part-Beagle. They both love being with people and will do anything to be pet and get belly rubs! They've gotten along so well with our nephews when they have visited, so we know they will be great with any child who joins our family.

The neighborhood has been wonderful—so many families with kids around of all ages. Being so close to lakes and wooded groves really makes the neighborhood feel quiet and clean. Almost every day we go on walks around the neighborhood for a little exercise, and there's always children playing with their friends in the grass and driveways. There's even a community playground that's been very popular with the kids. And of course, we're fortunate to live so close to Disney World—we know a child would have lots of fun going there all the time!

Our Extended Families

Gideon's Family

Our families have been incredibly supportive of our plan to adopt and can't wait to meet the new baby. Both sides of the family live throughout the Southeast, so we're able to visit each other on holidays. In fact, Gideon's parents live just 20 minutes away and we see them quite often. We think it's great that there will be one set of grandparents close by.

Dallin's Family

Dallin's brother has one son, and Gideon's brother has two. There are more nieces and nephews on the way, as well! Any child who joins our family will have lots of cousins to meet and grow up with.

Getting together for holidays is one of our favorite family traditions. For our first Thanksgiving at our new home, we hosted each of our families together. Our young nephews played with race cars around the house the whole weekend. And it was another chance for all of us to have Gideon's homemade bread that he makes from scratch every year.

Though we're focused on this adoption right now, it's our hope that we will adopt again in the future and that your child will have a loving brother or sister to grow up with!

From Us to You

Growing up as gay men, we used to never think we could one day marry and raise a family. But thanks to your courageous, selfless decision to consider an adoption plan, we hope to be able to do just that. We want you to know that we will give a child the best life that we can possibly give—a great education and love from us and all of our family.

We are confident we will be strong and loving fathers and recognize that you would always be their mother. We will make sure the child knows how much love you have for them and how you made our dream of a family possible.

We've always wanted to be dads—family is very important to both of us. We are excited to raise a child that we can love, teach, and help have the best life possible. In 2018 we built a big, beautiful house so that we would have a perfect place for our growing family. We're extremely proud of how it turned out and can't wait to share it with a child!

We met in 2010 at a coffee shop in Atlanta and began living together shortly after that. A couple years later, we moved down to Florida, and in 2014 we got married. Early on in our relationship we both shared that we wanted to adopt one day. It will be a way to truly devote ourselves to the well-being and growth of another human being.

Gideon is a lawyer and runs his own small law firm. The office, in fact, is just a few minutes away from our house! One of the big advantages to running his own practice instead of working for a larger firm is that Gideon sets his own hours—he almost always comes home just after 5 p.m. so that we can eat dinner and enjoy the evening together as a family. His schedule is also very flexible, so he'll easily be able to take time off to help out at home or for any important events.

Dallin is currently an office manager, but he'll instead be staying home full-time once we adopt. It's important for us to have one parent stay at home to make sure that the child has all the attention and care that he or she needs. And, with Gideon's parents just a short drive away, a new baby will certainly have lots of family for support!

Over the last year we have been educating ourselves to best understand what you may be going through right now as you decide whether to place your child for adoption. We've learned how important it is to be open about the adoption for both you and the child. We would love to include you in what the child thinks of his family. It would be great to learn about you and some of your own family values and traditions. We think it could be helpful for the child for us to incorporate those traditions into our own as the child gets older.

Of course, we will be looking forward to sharing pictures and letters with you as time goes on--we hope to make you proud and put you at ease over your courageous decision to consider adoption.

Our ultimate goal would be to raise your child to become an intelligent, caring, successful, and healthy adult. We think it would be such a privilege to open our home to your child and give them a life full of love and opportunity. Thank you so much for considering us as adoptive parents—we are truly grateful.
